AFL Community Club

The AFL Community Club is an excellent resource that I strongly encourage community football clubs to avail themselves to.

The online resource provides extensive information and advice on managing your club, how to become a coach, coaching skills and drills, injury management, fitness, nutrition, participation pathway, female football resources, multicultural and indigenous football pathways, becoming an umpire, umpire education, umpire coach education, laws of the game, becoming a volunteer, recognition of volunteers and more.

Check it out and pass it on!

Will fasting slow down Muslim Olympians?

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and begins on Friday 20th July, 2012, one week before the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games. Ramadan is a period of prayer, resisting temptation and fasting from food, drink and sex during daylight hours. Muslims are also encouraged to be charitable during Ramadan. The period of Ramadan in 2012 encompasses the entire Olympic Games calendar and could have a great impact on the performances of thousands of Muslim competitors from many countries. The following two articles address this topical issue.

AIS ‘Wet Plate’ technology gives swimmers the edge

Force platforms built into the starting blocks and walls of the AIS Technology Pool are enabling AIS Sports Scientists train our relay swimmers to peak performance as we approach the 2012 London Olympic Games. The technology allows the collection of important data regarding times for relay changeovers, turns, starts, and swim speed. Once collected, data is displayed on plasma screens for scrutiny and analysis by Aquatic Testing, Training and Research Staff. This data combined with video footage of swimmers gives the Sports Scientists and coaching staff the information they need to improve swimmers race times and relay skills so our Aussie swimmers continue to produce extraordinary performances.

Inside Football - Head Cases

Concussion is arguably the most topical issues in the AFL this year, especially given the changes to the interchange rules. Do the AFL need to add a concussion substitute? Do helmets help prevent concussion? When should a concussed player return to training and sport? Find out all of the answers to these questions and more in the 'Head Cases' article, first featured in the August 3, 2011 edition of Inside Football Magazine.
